Inside Seraphic Fire

Why Choral Music Is Making a Comeback

The Seraphic Fire choir led by Dr. James Bass performs to a full audience on a church alter in front of a colorful stained glass window.

For many people, live music has become more than entertainment. It has become an opportunity to disconnect from screens, slow down, and experience something real.

Across the country, audiences are returning to concert halls, churches, and performing arts venues in growing numbers. Classical music attendance is rebounding. A cappella ensembles are attracting new listeners. Younger audiences are discovering vocal music through film scores, streaming platforms, and social media before seeking out live performances.

Choral music, one of the oldest musical traditions in the world, is finding a new audience.

Seraphic Fire experienced that momentum firsthand during its recently completed 2025-2026 season. The organization welcomed nearly 1,000 first-time patrons, increased ticket sales revenue by 36 percent over the previous season, and doubled its Naples audience. Those results reflect something larger than a successful season. They suggest that more people are rediscovering the power of live choral music.

More Than Background Music

Music today often accompanies something else. We listen while driving, exercising, answering emails, or scrolling through our phones.

A live choral performance asks something different - it invites you to simply listen.

Without microphones or electronic effects, the human voice becomes the entire instrument. Every phrase, harmony, and moment of silence happens in real time. Every performance is unique because it exists only once.

That kind of experience has become increasingly rare and increasingly meaningful.

The Human Voice Connects Us

Long before orchestras, opera houses, or concert halls existed, communities gathered to sing together.

Across cultures and centuries, the human voice has celebrated victories, comforted grief, expressed faith, and told stories that have shaped generations.

That connection still exists today.

Whether performing Renaissance masterworks, American folk songs, contemporary compositions, or newly commissioned works, professional choirs remind us that music begins with something deeply human. A shared breath. A shared sound. A shared experience.

A New Generation Is Discovering Choral Music

Many first-time audience members are surprised by what they hear.

Professional choral music is far more diverse than many people expect. Today's programs often include music spanning hundreds of years, blending classical masterworks with contemporary composers, folk traditions, spirituals, jazz influences, and music inspired by cultures around the world.

At Seraphic Fire, audiences might experience Monteverdi one month, American folk songs the next, and then contemporary works written in the last decade. That artistic variety has become one of the hallmarks of the ensemble.

Beginning this season, GRAMMY Award-winning conductor Dr. James K. Bass leads Seraphic Fire into its next chapter as Artistic Director. While the organization remains rooted in the classical tradition established by Founder and Artistic Director Laureate Patrick Dupre Quigley, audiences can also look forward to thoughtfully curated contemporary repertoire that reflects today's musical landscape.

More Than a Concert

Seraphic Fire's impact extends well beyond the stage.

As the Miami Herald's 2025 Miami-Dade Favorite Nonprofit, the organization reaches thousands of students each year through education concerts, school residencies, workshops, mentorship opportunities, and the tuition-free High School Professional Choral Institute.

That investment in education helps inspire the next generation of musicians while strengthening South Florida's cultural future.

Every performance supports that broader mission.

Experience the Difference

The best way to understand choral music is to experience it live.

No recording can recreate the warmth of voices filling a room. No speaker can capture the subtle harmonies, the resonance of an acoustic space, or the connection between performers and audience.

Whether you are discovering choral music for the first time or returning after many years, there has never been a better time to experience Seraphic Fire.

Now entering its 24th season, Florida's only GRAMMY-nominated professional choir continues to present world-class performances in Miami, Coral Gables, Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and Naples.
