June 1 marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Seraphic Fire's history.
After 24 extraordinary seasons under the leadership of Founder and Artistic Director Patrick Dupre Quigley, James K. Bass officially begins his tenure as Artistic Director of Seraphic Fire.
For many audience members, James is already a familiar face. As Associate Conductor, longtime collaborator, singer, educator, and co-founder of Seraphic Fire's Professional Choral Institute, he has been an integral part of the organization for many years. Now, he takes the artistic reins of one of the nation's leading professional vocal ensembles and Florida's only GRAMMY-nominated professional choir.
His appointment represents both continuity and opportunity. James understands the artistic values that have defined Seraphic Fire from the beginning while bringing fresh ideas and new energy to the organization's future.
A GRAMMY Award-Winning Musician and Educator
James is widely recognized as one of the leading choral musicians in the United States.
In 2020, he received a GRAMMY Award for Best Choral Performance as Chorusmaster and soloist for Richard Danielpour's The Passion of Yeshua. Throughout his career, he has appeared as both conductor and singer with many of the country's most respected musical organizations, including the Cleveland Orchestra, New World Symphony, Conspirare, Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Trinity Wall Street, True Concord, and Seraphic Fire.
Today, he serves as Professor and Director of Choral Studies and Chair of the Department of Music Performance, Education, and Composition at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, where he mentors the next generation of singers, conductors, and music educators.
His career reflects the same qualities that have long defined Seraphic Fire: artistry, excellence, curiosity, and a commitment to musical storytelling.
Building on a Strong Foundation
James has often spoken about the transformative power of music in his own life.
Growing up in Tampa, he discovered music through public school arts programs. What began with a rented violin and a memorable field trip eventually led to a career performing and conducting at the highest levels of the profession.
That personal journey continues to shape his artistic philosophy today.
Under James's leadership, audiences can expect the same commitment to world-class classical choral music that has defined Seraphic Fire for more than two decades. At the same time, he brings an enthusiasm for exploring new repertoire and contemporary voices that will complement and expand the organization's artistic offerings.
This is not a departure from Seraphic Fire's mission.
It is the next step in an artistic evolution that honors the organization's past while embracing its future.
Already at Work
James officially assumed the role of Artistic Director on June 1, but he is already hard at work.
This week, he is leading Seraphic Fire's High School Professional Choral Institute at Florida International University, one of the organization's flagship education programs. The institute brings together talented high school singers from across South Florida for an intensive week of musical training, mentorship, and performance.
The week concludes with a free public concert on Saturday at FIU, offering audiences the opportunity to hear the next generation of choral artists perform under James's direction.
The program reflects one of James's deepest passions: education. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to developing young musicians and creating opportunities for students to experience music at the highest level.
Looking Ahead to October
The excitement continues this fall when James conducts his first subscription series concerts as Artistic Director.
Audiences will have their first opportunity to experience his artistic vision for Seraphic Fire's 24th season, which celebrates both tradition and discovery through programs spanning centuries, cultures, and musical styles.
While leadership may be changing, the values that have guided Seraphic Fire for 24 years remain unchanged: artistic excellence, musical integrity, education, innovation, and community.
We are deeply grateful to Patrick Dupre Quigley for building this extraordinary organization and thrilled to welcome James K. Bass into his new role as Artistic Director.
The future of Seraphic Fire is bright, and we cannot wait to share it with you.
