Gospel: An Electrifying Celebration of American Music

Guest Conductor Jason Max Ferdinand is pictured in front of a blue and purple decorative background with the word "Gospel" superimposed over the image.

This January, Seraphic Fire turns its focus to one of the most powerful and influential musical traditions in American history. From January 15 to 18, audiences across South Florida are invited to experience Gospel, a moving concert program that celebrates the spiritual, emotional, and musical depth of gospel music.

Led by internationally celebrated guest conductor Jason Max Ferdinand, Gospel brings together Seraphic Fire’s GRAMMY-nominated singers and piano for a performance filled with passion, soul, and extraordinary artistry. Featuring beloved works such as Amazing Grace, Precious Lord, and O Happy Day, this concert offers an unforgettable journey through music that has shaped generations of American sound.

A Living Tradition with Deep Roots

Gospel music sits at the heart of American musical history. Born from spirituals and sacred song, it laid the foundation for genres ranging from jazz and rhythm & blues to rock and popular music. These songs speak to resilience, hope, and faith, and they continue to resonate across cultures and generations.

Artistic Director Patrick Dupre Quigley invited Jason Max Ferdinand to lead this program because of his distinctive musical voice and deep connection to the repertoire. Ferdinand brings clarity, energy, and purpose to this music, honoring its roots while inviting audiences to experience it with renewed understanding and emotional impact.

Music That Moves the Soul

The program highlights the expressive range of gospel music, from intimate moments of reflection to exhilarating expressions of joy. Thomas A. Dorsey’s Precious Lord anchors the evening with its enduring message of comfort and strength. Arrangements of Amazing Grace and He’s Got the Whole World offer familiar melodies shaped by rich harmonies and dynamic contrast.

Other selections include Lift Every Voice and Sing, often called the Black National Anthem, alongside spirited works such as Ride in the Chariot and Praise Medley. Together, these pieces create a powerful musical arc that reflects the depth, humanity, and lasting relevance of gospel music.

A pre-concert conversation will be presented one hour before each performance by Dr. Marques J. Ruff, offering audiences insight into the history, context, and meaning behind this remarkable repertoire.

This concert series is made possible in part by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, supporting the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and the enduring role of gospel music in our national story.

For our Naples patrons, the celebration continues beyond the final note. Following the Sunday performance at Moorings Presbyterian, you are warmly invited to a Stewardship Reception honoring our subscribers and donors. The reception will take place in the Narthex/lobby outside the Sanctuary, with light food and beverages served as a thank you for your generosity and commitment to Seraphic Fire.
